HoverSub does nothing on a site until you click its icon there and press Enable on this site. Chrome then asks you to allow that site and, if the video plays in a frame from another site, that player's site too. You can turn it off on the same button (“Turn off here”) or in Chrome's own site access settings at any time.
On an enabled page (or its player frame) that contains a <video>, HoverSub looks at text displayed on the picture of that video — the subtitles — to find the word under your mouse pointer (and at text right under the picture if the player marks it as subtitles). Other text on the page, form fields and passwords are not read. On pages without a video the extension stays idle.
While a video plays, the last subtitle lines are kept in the page's memory only (up to 30 lines, never stored), so that a sentence split over two lines can be translated as a whole. They are discarded when you close or reload the page.
The position of your mouse pointer is used only on your computer to find the word under it; it is not stored or sent. The 🔊 button speaks a word with a voice installed on your computer.
When you point at a word (or save it), HoverSub sends the following to Google Translate over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) at translate.googleapis.com, or at clients5.google.com if the first address refuses:
After an update of HoverSub, the sentences of words you saved earlier may be sent once more in the same way, so that their translations follow the new version.
HoverSub adds no account, identifier, page address or other personal data to these requests. As with any internet request, Google receives your IP address and standard browser information. Google's processing is covered by the Google Privacy Policy. No other service receives any data, and the extension downloads no code or fonts from the internet.

HoverSub's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only for the extension's single purpose — translating subtitle words and keeping your word list — and is not transferred, sold or used for advertising.

Остальной текст страницы, поля форм и пароли не читаются. На страницах без видео расширение ничего не делает.
Пока видео идёт, последние строки субтитров держатся только в памяти страницы (до 30 строк, никуда не сохраняются), чтобы предложение, разбитое на две строки, переводилось целиком. Они исчезают, когда вы закрываете или обновляете страницу.
Положение курсора используется только на вашем компьютере, чтобы найти слово под ним; оно не сохраняется и не отправляется. Кнопка 🔊 произносит слово голосом, установленным на вашем компьютере.
Когда вы наводите на слово (или сохраняете его), HoverSub отправляет в Google Переводчик по защищённому соединению (HTTPS) на translate.googleapis.com, а если тот отказывает — на clients5.google.com:
После обновления HoverSub фразы ранее сохранённых слов могут один раз отправиться так же ещё раз, чтобы их переводы соответствовали новой версии.
HoverSub не добавляет к этим запросам ни аккаунтов, ни идентификаторов, ни адреса страницы, ни других личных данных. Как при любом запросе в интернет, Google видит ваш IP-адрес и стандартные данные браузера; их обработку описывает Политика конфиденциальности Google. Никакие другие сервисы данных не получают, и расширение не загружает из интернета ни код, ни шрифты.

Использование данных в HoverSub соответствует правилам Chrome Web Store о пользовательских данных, включая требования Limited Use.
